Happy New Year! The U.S. economy is expected to expand by 3.9 percent for the 4th quarter of 2022 according to the GDPNow™ estimate of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta on January 3, 2023. While this is surprisingly strong given the Conference Board Leading Economic Index® which predicts a recession in 2023, it does give us reason to pause as we anticipate additional Federal Reserve tightening and the potential that most of the work in policy has been done. We are now just waiting for the real economy to reset to higher interest rates and for any slowdown to be modest. As you prepare for 2023, I hope you and your family have a chance to plan something special. It has been a long time since we started a year without first thinking of COVID, and let’s hope that is a new normal!
